Listen to Montreal’s new rap anthem

Full Course serves up an earful, PLUS: win tickets to the Black Milk show on Sunday.

shineWe’re all set for a tight little long weekend of good live hip hop and beats from beyond. Too bad I’ll be missing out, as I have to get to TO to see some fam, but I’ll be bringing this gem of a Montreal anthem along for the ride so as not to stray too far from home.

Full Course’s new, Tae (“Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe”) Beast-produced ode to the good, the bad and the ugly, “Empty L,” might be the best rap song ever written about our city, and to do it up proper, everyone’s favourite bar bouncer on the mic flips it in French for a verse, too. You can afford a buck for this song on Bandcamp, but it streams there, as well. While you’re at it, download 2012’s Entree in its entirety, if you haven’t yet. And if you haven’t yet…what the hell is wrong with you?

Hopefully these parties will set you straight. Happy Thanksgiving, folks.

Friday: Kick off three days of maxin’ and relaxin’ with CJLO’s weekly 5-à-7 over at Bleury Bar à Vinyle, with the Concordia radio station’s special blend of funk, soul, house, hip hop, world and more.

Saturday: It’s Artbeat 9 at le Belmont, and all I can say is TO ain’t got it like this. Da-P, Ajust, Grandbuda, Ruffsound, Vincent Pryce, Yung Gayance, Osti One, Tommy Kruise, at least one unannounced guest and a whole lotta motherfuckin’ blood on the dancefloor. I strongly suggest anyone reading this right now be there for this next chapter of history in the making.

Meanwhile, NYC’s Flatbush Zombies — well on the come-up alongside the likes of Pro Era and that whole young generation of fresh hip hop blood out the five boroughs — headline Montreal for the first time at Cabaret Underworld. Definitely the right call for someone seeking an evening of raw rap shit, uncut.

Or maybe you just wanna chill with some friends or a date (or by your damn self) with some rum and tapas. Barraca launches a new weekly DJ series, YO! C’est Samedi with the perfect guest to set things off, Scott C.

Sunday: While I am eating turkey in the GTA suburbs with my girlfriend’s people, Black Milk returns to Montreal for the first time since November of 2010. Funnily enough, that was our first official date, and we were accompanied by my eldest niece, whom I had invited prior to meeting my GF. So, long story short, I do have a ton to be thankful for, but I am nonetheless seething with envy for those of you who heed the call to go see this show.

The incredibly gifted rapper/producer, on the eve of releasing No Poison, No Paradise, brings that Dilla-certified, give-the-drummer-everything Detroit shit to life on stage with a live trio that includes beyond-wicked stick man Daru Jones, which should thrill Jack White fans.

So lemme put the “giving” into the holiday. The first two people to email me the name of Black Milk’s first group will be Cult MTL and Cabaret Underworld’s guests for the show, and both will get to bring a friend and share the love.

Thursday: Hip Hop Karaoke returns to le Belmont with beats, rhymes, BBQ and East Coast/West Coast beef on the menu. ■
