What to see this weekend

The weekend forecast is callin’ for rain, and if you’re missing out on Osheaga, perhaps you should check out these local theatrical releases.

Berberian Sound Studio

If you want to see your nostalgic childhood memories smashed to smithereens, you could always check out Smurfs 2. Hank Azaria plays Gargamel, who has kidnaped Smurfette (Katy Perry) and is trying to convince her to join his band of misbehaving Smurf-like creatures called Naughties.

Baltasar Kormákur’s 2 Guns starring Denzel Washington and Mark Walhberg, looks promising. Two undercover agents infiltrate a drug cartel unaware that the other is also undercover. The mission is unsuccessful, and the pair flee together.

Ziad Doueiri’s The Attack explores the relationship of a happily married couple in Tel Aviv whose lives fall apart after a suicide bombing. Slowly, the husband, Amin Jaafari (Ali Suliman), starts to discover that his own wife played a significant role in the attack.

If you’re looking for something different, Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio is an auditory feast. The film takes place in an ‘70s Italian horror studio where strange events start to unfold.

Wadjda is Haifaa Al-Masour’s highly anticipated film about a young Saudi girl (Waad Mohammed) questioning gender roles and her faith as she tries to save her money in order to buy a bicycle.■
