Escape your hot apartment, see these films

Including cowboys, a strip club, pirates and a teen ghost, here are today’s local theater releases.

The Manor

Let’s face it, we all can’t afford the luxury of air conditioning. As I sit here typing, I have a fan blasting about five inches from my face and a general lack of clothing that makes me entirely unprepared for fire drills, deliveries or visitors. The idea of sitting in an air conditioned theater for two hours munching on popcorn is something worth getting dressed for.

Disney’s new Pirates of the Caribbean replacement The Lone Ranger hit theaters on Wednesday (you can read our review here). The film follows the tale of Tonto (Johnny Depp), a Native American warrior who revives cowboy John Reid (Armie Hammer) from the dead in order to seek revenge on his killer.

If you’re looking for something silly and lighthearted, Despicable Me 2 is a safe bet. Although it’s a dreaded sequel, word has it that the film is surprisingly on par with its predecessor. Gru (Steve Carell) is taken by the Anti-Villain League to help them take on a brand new villain.

Shawney Cohen’s documentary The Manor explores his own strange family — his overweight father, underweight mother and their family-run small town strip club. The film shows their struggle trying to nurse their business and themselves back to health.

Danish film A Hijacking is a nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat drama. A Danish cargo ship gets hijacked by Somali pirates, who attempt to negotiate with Copenhagen using the lives of the men on board to bargain for money.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt is not his best work, but it is one of three films that he’s directed over the past decade. Val Kilmer plays Hall Baltimore, a writer who’s arrived in a small town to find himself in the middle of a murder mystery.

Tonight (July 5) only, you can check out Terrence Malick’s To the Wonder at the PHI Centre. It’s a beautiful film, (honestly it feels like every shot borders on perfection) that explores love in all its forms. ■
