DVDs and Blu-rays out today

Here’s our selection of noteworthy releases:

I don’t remember hearing about this film when it hit theaters, and to be fair it received mixed reviews, but Juan Solanas’ Upside Down could be an interesting rainy day choice. Starring Kirsten Dunst (Eden) and Jim Sturgess (Adam), the pair live in juxtaposed worlds, one above and one below (literally) — when love brews so does trouble, as communication between the two places is forbidden.

Brad Anderson’s The Call stars Halle Berry as veteran 911 operator Jordan Turner. She gets a call from a panicked teen hiding from an intruder in her home. When the call drops suddenly, she phones back giving away the teen’s hiding spot and essentially enabling the intruder to find and kill her. Six months later she receives a call from another teen (Abigail Breslin) in a very similar situation, with what sounds like the same attacker. Edge of your seat material? Yes.

For Sundance fans two films may be of interest: Calvin Reeder’s The Rambler, which honestly looks mental. A strange fella with a guitar case, wanders into an even stranger town after recently being released from prison.

And No, a Pablo Larraín film about advertising tactics being used in the 1988 plebiscite referendum in Chile.

If you haven’t been watching Portlandia this is your chance to start (and you should). Season three is now available with more fantastic sketches by Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein.

Music fans will definitely enjoy Glastonbury the Movie In Flashback, the set includes a re-release of the film, 13 hours of video and over 24 hours of audio. Delightful.

As well as the Blu-ray edition of the Beatles’ Help!, which includes a 30-minute documentary about the making of the film.

And finally, Universal is also re-releasing 14 films on Blu-ray as part of their “Reel Heroes” Steelbook Collection. The set includes: Pitch BlackThe Big LebowskiSerenityThe Incredible HulkDoomVan Helsing, PaulThe MummyScarfaceThe Chronicles of RiddickHellboy IIHulkScott Pilgrim vs. the World and Death Race. ■
