Sweet Tooth — mostly mediocre macarons à maison

Fall inspires plenty to look forward to and complain about all at once — much like the fall harvest-inspired flavours at La Maison du Macaron. What to get, and what to ditch?

Fall inspires plenty to look forward to and complain about all at once — much like the fall harvest-inspired flavours at La Maison du Macaron. What to get, and what to ditch?

For the entire month of October, you can and will want to get up close and personal with the butternut squash and chocolate-caramel macaron. Sporting a cheerful shade of orange, the super-sweet almond-meringue cookies have an egg-like shell exterior that cracks under the slightest pressure, yielding moist and chewy crumb, but they don’t have any detectable butternut squash flavour. Luckily, the middle layer of lush chocolate-caramel buttercream comes through really nicely. One, please! Maybe two.

Another fall number is the green apple macaron, which happens to be one of six in the new fall/winter 2012 collection. The apple flavour is strongest at the centre, with little pieces folded into the close-to-foamy filling. Hard to go wrong with apple desserts, but this one leaves much to be desired. Maybe a dash of cinnamon would’ve made all the difference.

Between you and me, I’m quick to overlook La Maison du Macaron seeing, as how my favourite macaron maker, Boutique Point G, is just around the corner. But La Maison du Macaron does make good macarons. And about this season’s specials, butternut squash trumps green apple. You know what to do.
