Michel Duguay is a game tester by day and a game creator by night. The Montrealer and his dedicated team of five—they’re called Darklite—are currently working on Memories of A Vagabond – Broken Destiny, a dark, atmospheric Japanese-style turn-based role-playing game that fans of Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger will immediately take a shining to.

Duguay says Memories of a Vagabond is being made with seasoned RPG vets and casual gamers in mind. “What makes the game very unique is there’s no game over screen,” says Duguay. “Every time the hero dies, his soul goes to the underworld and the hero has the choice to be re-incarnated in a new body.” The available bodies then fall under one of four different classes: warrior, mage, hunter and assassin.

“If the hero was a fierce warrior and died having mastered the toughness ability, that ability can then be used in the next body,” Duguay says. “So it’s possible to have a mage character with the toughness ability learned.”

He adds that the game was also influenced by more recent non-RPGs like Dark Souls and Silent Hill. “The game has cool puzzles, an ever-changing story based on your actions, fun mini-games, an easy alchemy system and a lot of exploration.”

The Darklite team is aiming to release the game for PCs this fall or winter, and they’re looking for PayPal donations to help fund their development during the final stretch. “Sadly, my tester’s salary doesn’t cover everything,” he says. “There’s the website hosting to pay, the engine’s license, the music, the programming and marketing because we’d like to improve the visibility of the game.” Despite the shoestring budget, Duguay says he always pays people who provide one-off services for the game (like music).

They’ve just released a demo of the game, which you can download from their website. Here’s a trailer for Memories of A Vagabond – Broken Destiny. ■
